Released in 1969, the Speedmaster Mark II was Omega's first major redesign of the classic "Moonwatch" Speedmaster Professional. While the "Moonwatch" was flying to space, the Mark II was designed to be a more modern and robust chronograph for professionals back on Earth.
The most striking feature of the Mark II is its bold, barrel-shaped (or "tonneau") case with hidden lugs. This was a radical departure from the classic lyre-lug design and perfectly captures the futuristic, bold aesthetic of the late 1960s and early 1970s.
While most Mark IIs had a traditional black dial, the "Racing" dial version you have is far more rare and sought after. Its vibrant, checkered red and orange outer track and matching orange chronograph hands were designed for maximum legibility, especially for motorsport professionals. It's a pop of color and personality that makes this watch a true standout.
Unlike the classic Speedmaster with an external tachymeter bezel, the Mark II's tachymeter scale is printed on the underside of the crystal. This design choice not only protected the scale from scratches but also gave the dial an incredible sense of depth.
Despite its new look, the Mark II housed the same workhorse movement as the "Moonwatch" of its era: the manual-winding Calibre 861. This cam-operated chronograph movement was a more efficient and robust evolution of the legendary Calibre 321 and was flight-qualified by NASA, giving this watch serious credentials.
The Mark II's development was influenced by Omega's secretive "Alaska Project," a program to create a more temperature-resistant watch for NASA. The lessons learned in that project—like a more durable case and crystal—found their way into the consumer-friendly Mark II.
